Miami University wished to create a large SCALE-UP (Student-Centered Active Learning Environment for Undergraduate Programs) classroom within the third floor of historic Upham Hall. The goal was to establish a dynamic learning environment flexible enough to hold a variety of class sizes ranging from 24 to 114. SHYFT worked through numerous options with the University to create a layout centered on the desired six student group sizes, providing each group with access to collaborative technology, maintaining effective sightlines & circulation paths for faculty to navigate the room while also fitting within the available footprint. An expedited bid package for the operable walls was necessary to provide the desired flexibility while also enabling the University to overcome lead time challenges to complete the renovation in three months. SHYFT’s leadership during construction was paramount in completing the project on-time for the University to occupy the new space in time for the start of the fall semester.
