Meet Sammy Bonner

Q: How did you get involved with SHYFT? How long have you been with us?

A: I started at SHYFT in February 2019 as an intern until I finished my bachelor's at Ohio State. After graduating in May of that year, I began full-time as a designer and have been here ever since!

Q: What are some projects you are currently working on?

A: I’m working on quite a few things right now. I’m working on a restaurant and taproom, a climbing gym expansion, an entrance renovation for the Ohio Bureau of Worker’s Compensation, a multi-family development in Fort Dodge, IA, and a few single-family residences around Columbus, OH.

Q: What is the one thing you are most proud of since joining SHYFT?

A: I’m most proud of my growth as a designer and as a team member while at SHYFT. It’s crazy to think about the level that I started at as an intern and where I am now. Project-wise, I’m so proud of a campus design/planning exercise that we did for one of our Owner’s Rep clients. Producing an entire site and a 36,000 SF facility with a more traditional architectural style was definitely more than I thought I would ever get to tackle, so those renderings are my biggest accomplishment while being here.

Q: What are a few of your career highlights?

A: The project I mentioned above is absolutely a highlight for me, but I would also say getting to work on the taproom/restaurant project going on right now is another favorite. I worked as a bartender and waitress for 5 years, so I find it very rewarding to get to work on projects within that realm of expertise. Working with Casie on our SHYFT marketing efforts to create a really cohesive brand/website/etc. has been something that I’m proud to see our team implement. We’ve been working hard to help produce great content from the wealth of knowledge that is the SHYFT team. I’m very proud of that effort. Also, joining the IIDA Ohio Kentucky Chapter board in 2020 has been such a delightful experience and helped me grow my leadership skills so much.

Q: What are your favorite brewery design trends right now?

A: My favorite trend in brewery design is incorporating local artists into the design! There are a number of breweries in Columbus that hire artists to paint murals on their taproom walls, and it’s so exciting to see the massive local talent in a fun place to hang out and drink great beer. I think it also speaks volumes about the impact/importance of the craft brewing industry in central Ohio.

Q: Tell us something unique about you.

A: I religiously watched Bar Rescue as a kid and it was one of the reasons that I decided to study interior design in college! Hence the fascination and interest in brewery/taproom/restaurant design. I also love astrology and I’m convinced that SHYFT has too many fire signs. In my opinion, “what’s your zodiac sign?” should absolutely be an interview question when hiring.

Thank you, Sammy, for all you do for the SHYFT Team!
